Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
4months • Holds head up steadily  YES
• Can bear weight on legs   YES
• Coos when you talk to him  YES
• Can grasp a toy YES
• Reaches out for objects YES
• Can roll over NOT YET
• Imitates speech  sounds — baba, dadaNOT YET
• May cut first tooth NOT YET
• May be ready for solids NOT YET

Today was a busy morning. At 8:30 I took Timothy for his teeth cleaning, and he was extremely good(he asked to bring his own Thomas the Tank DVD so he watched the movie while his teeth were cleaned and checked out). Of course we had to buy donuts as reward.. I am glad he doesn't have cavity yet.. which is strange because he loves sweets.

Both yesterday and today Jacob stayed home because he's running a low grade fever which started on Sunday night. I hope this is a 72 hour thing and that it will pass by quickly without other symptoms.

We took Acacia for her 4 month old checkup and everything was great. We had to wait a LONG LONG LONG time for the doctor. And there were other sick children in the waiting room, I could only pray their germs didn't get to us. Acacia is 15 lbs 1 oz (80 %), she is very tall at 26 and 1/4 inches(100%), and her head circum. is 50% , same as last time. I was hoping to get combination shots, but she still got 4 seperate shots for 5 vaccines. I don't understand, but in Taiwan parents can request for 5合1 shots and we in the most developed country USA don't get the advanced shots? My poor little girl didn't like her shots at all, but as soon as I picked her up she was all smiles again. I hope she won't get any reaction to the shots this time. Fingers crossed!

Today Acacia is 4 months old exactly. During the past few days we finally decided on her Chinese name : 黃尚婷. Now she has a Chinese name we can start calling her 尚婷. Daddy likes this name because it's hard to find a word that follows 尚 that still sounds like a girl name. The word "婷" means:

1.[Formal] good-looking; graceful;graceful

        婷

        tíng

        〈形〉

            (1) (形声。从女,亭声。本义:美好的样子)

            (2) 颜色和悦 [(of color) pleasant]

                    婷,和色也。——《玉篇》

            (3) 优美、雅致 [graceful]。

            (4) 如:婷婷袅袅(形容女子体态柔美轻盈);婷娉(体态美好;又指美女)

In Conclusion, the word means graceful, and we sure hope she will live a graceful life.

This morning I went to the parent conference time with Jacob's teacher, Mrs. MacInnis. Jacob has all green passes from the subjects, and the teacher said he is above level on math, reading, and overall everything is excellent, even his behavior. I was very happy to hear that, it's great to know all the hardwork I do pays off. And I am happy to have a confident child at school. The only thing that he needs to work on is his handwriting, I told his teacher. So we will start working on that. Jacob LOVES to learn spelling words every week. Because he has been getting perfect scores on spelling tests each Friday, we promised him he would get a new toy if he has 4 perfect score(4) testes. And he works hard on his spelling and he can't wait for Friday to come to take the test... wow!! Today is only Wednesday and he is already ready for the test.

As for his math, we sometimes still struggle at his homework time, because mental math is not easy stuff and it's a lot of homework he has to do everyday, on top of his reading. I try to tell myself to cool down and not get angry when he is frustrated. After all we really just wanted to expose him to another way of mastering math, not to force him. After my attitude changed, Jacob seemed to be better, more relaxed. I really need to remember Jacob is only a 6.85 years old little boy. I don't want him to be a genuis, I just want him to be a confident happy kiddo.

I also went in for my bi yearly teeth cleaning today ... OUCH! I dread this time. Bad news. I have 3 spots between teeth that have cavity and another spot under the filling, so total of 4 places that need to be fixed. The dentist asked if I have been flossing everyday... of course I do... or at least I try to... but I have to admit since I gave birth some days I have been sloppy... when I got too tired, I would fall asleep while holding Acacia to sleep, and several times I did not brush.. until I woke up at midnight....   I am sure that's the cause of these new cavity... but I won't admit that to my dentist..hehe.

Acacia did really well at my teeth cleaning time today, all smiles and cooing. The staff loved playing with her, and she didn't cry at all, my dentist held her for a while. They all thought she was a great baby, and very pretty!! Of course, see her parents they should know... haha.

Well, Acacia no longer has her ear tag.
On Friday I took her(and Timothy) to see a pediatric surgeon, hoping to schedule a time to have Acacia's ear tag taken off. The doctor quickly looked at it and said, "I think I can do it right now"... YAHOO!! Can't be better than that! So the doctor gave Acacia some numbing shots around the ear tag, and of course little princess wailed,
but as soon as I picked her up she calmed down and even started to smile. I guess the numbing medicine works quickly. After waiting for 5 minutes the doctor came in with 2 nurses(the 3 of us hold Acacia so she couldn't move). The doctor used a kind of burning device, it's like fuses with laser or something and started to take off the ear tag. According to the doctor it shouldn't be painful for Acacia, but she still cried very hard. It really only took less than a minute for the whole process and we could smell this terrible burnt smell. Then it's all over. Acacia no longer has ear tag.
Before the doctor did the little surgery, I took several pictures of her ear tag just so she could see how it looked like one day, also for me to remember how she was born with the ear tag... I actually felt a little sad... because the ear tag was surely in the genes that came from my grandmother. But we felt for Acacia's sake it should be taken off... so she wouldn't feel bad about it when she is a little older.

I guess it really didn't hurt too bad because she seemed very normal afterwards. I only gave her some pain medicine once just to be safe.

Last night was another story. For some reason she cried and cried and cried and cried at around 8pm, none of us could comfort her.  We couldn't figure out what was wrong with her, but finally I took over and she stopped crying, and I was able to get her to giggle and smile... mommy's girl FOR SURE!! That's right, unbelivable as it can be, Acacia already has her preference in mommy. Everyone says how could it be possible, she is too young to do that! But I guess she is extra smart because she surely knows who she likes Mommy mommy mommy!!

Today my mom helped with the free flu shots at the elderly apartment center and she took home flu shots for us. Jacob was very brave and volunteered to take it first, only ending up with crying said I lied to him it hurt so much. I guess that scared Timothy and he refused to take the shot. after about 30 minutes he finally gave in, and he didn't even make a sound when my mom stick the shot in. He actually has higher pain tolerance than Jacob!! Way to go my boy! Hopefully the flu shots will really work and we will all be flu-free for the winter season. Now everyone except Acacia in the family is immuned.. keeping our fingers crossed !! No virus welcome!

We came back from our trip to Memphis TN on Monday night. It was a very happy trip, except for Jacob getting his left foot hurt on the last night before we came back.

on Friday(11/4):
Daddy came home after 2 pm from work, we hurriedly loaded our stuff unto the van, and we went to pick up Jacob at school. We drove for a very long 7 hours, only stopping to buy dinner and use the restroom. We could tell there were lots of tall trees by the highway but since it was dark we couldn't see how it's like.
We finally arrived at brother 劉峙 and 華露's house, it was already 11pm. 樂樂 was still awake waiting for us. The boys played for a while and almost everyone was so tired but too excited to go to bed.
華露 prepared some chicken soup for us to eat, very yummy and warmed our hearts. We set up the air bed and the boys were still too excited they talked and giggled until after 1am to finally drift off.

on Saturday(11/5):
The boys woke up early, they couldn't wait to play with
樂樂. We had a big breakfast... but one thing I shouldn't have eaten was scrambled eggs which caused stomache ache later on. Jacob was so good, he did his math homework for the day!!
華露 prepared lots of food to bring for the picnic by the lake.
劉峙's coworker(a couple with a 1 year old girl) came to meet us and we left for the lake in a small town in AK. The trip was about 1.5 hours long, and I had a stomache in the car, not too bad but very uncomfortable. 華露 told me her mom also had gallbladder taken out and also I got some very helpful info, like the kinds of foods I should avoid... The boys had fun talking and playing and eating snacks with a little disagreements here and there. Acacia slept a lot during the trip and was such a good baby. 樂樂 and Timothy fought for her attention the whole time.

With a little getting lost we finally arrived at the lake... what a beautiful sight! The leaves were turning fall colors and the lake was shinning under the sun. But it was still a little chilly for picnic. So we changed to another spot, much better. About a hour later the sun fully came out and was much warmer. We started to eat, but realized
華露 forgot to bring forks and spoons and bowls... just at this right time another family arrived with utensils... They were saints as well. We all had a great time chatting and eating. The weather was getting perfect! After picnic we wanted to see another lake.. but we couldn't find it so we headed home. It was already 5pm, and we had to get ready for the love feast and small group meeting in the meeting home at 6pm.

Of course we were late for the love feast, but it was nice to see the church in Memphis. Only a small house right next to University of Memphis, but a brightly shinning golden lampstand for the Lord!!
We got home and chatted some then we went to bed, knowing a full busy day was coming!

on Sunday(11/6):

劉峙 took us to see their new house before we went to the meeting. They will be moving in another 2 weeks. The house is very close to the Shleby park, which is very big and nice!! There was a lake in the park with boats and we even saw some buffalos(with a baby buffalo nursing from his mommy)!! The leaves are turning colors and the scenery just looked beautiful.
